Tai Chi Classes

What is Tai Chi?  (Great Internal Energy)

Tai Chi is a soft martial art (originally) used for Self-Defence.  Today, most people practice it for the great health benefits it has to offer and for self and spiritual development.

The central part of any Tai Chi system is the FORM - this is a single person, empty-handed series of continuous, smooth, circular, precise, flowing movements.  There are many different styles of the Form.

The term SOFT in Tai Chi means that during training there is no tension in the muscles or mind, this allow for greater ease of movement which strengthens and mobilises joints and muscles, improving physical fitness, this in turn increases the circulation of blood and energy (Chi) around the body which produces a state of relaxation and calm.  These aspects of Tai Chi have made it attractive to many people as a type of stress release exercise.

Tai Chi balances you energy, which connects with both mind and the body, harmonizing them both.

"Be as still as a mountain and flow like a river."  (Anon).

Chi Kung
(Cultivation of the vital energy)

Chi Kung means exercises that work with energy.  These exercises can be either active or passive.  Chi Kung is excellent for aiding relaxation at any time, day or night; and in helping the body unwind from a busy schedule.

Chi Kung compliments Tai Chi practice - Chi Kung is usually practiced before a Tai Chi training session as a warm up and afterwards as a cool down (settling), but it can also be performed independently, and use for healing purposes by Advanced Practitioners.

It is moulding the Body's energy in Chi Kung that strength to practice Tai Chi energies - it aims to instil deep natural breathing and to Focus and Balance the mind.

Most commonly students begin with a combination of Chi Kung and Tai Chi.  Feeling the benefits of Tai Chi and Chi Kung is a gradual process.

- Calm, regular breathing
- Slow, gentle movement
- Mental focus
- Inner stillness
